Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote

Posted at 6:00 am under News

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University. Wow this was made all the way back in 2007? Very cool, and with the new craze of 3D obsession this is a great idea. You should have patented this idea.

I wish Nintendo would pay you for this idea. Well done. If they weren’t so incredibly lazy as a company, I would have faith that they would use this brilliant idea… but they’ll just rest on their laurels doing really great remakes of games they released 20 years ago instead of pushing any new tech. Sure the wiimote was brilliant idea in 2006, but it’s four years later and all they’ve given us since is crappy voicechat and a plastic wheel and a scale.
